At Hanlin Chinese School, we actively encourage students to step beyond the classroom and bring what they have learned into more authentic and expansive spaces. Recitation competitions and song-and-dance performances provide meaningful opportunities for students to transform language learning into confident self-expression.

In a recent recitation competition, students took to the stage and used their voices to convey the emotion and power of words. From poetry to classic literary pieces, each performance represented a deeper understanding of language. Through repeated practice, students learned to master pronunciation and rhythm, gradually discovering the connection between emotion and text. When they delivered their pieces in Chinese with confidence and clarity, language became more than something learned—it became something felt and shared.

To support students in presenting their best work, teachers provided thoughtful guidance tailored to each child’s age and language level. From understanding the meaning of the text to developing stage presence, and from refining intonation to expressing emotion, students built confidence step by step and learned to present themselves calmly and naturally on stage.

In song-and-dance performances, language blended seamlessly with music and movement. Through singing and dancing, students explored rhythm and emotion, while rehearsals and group performances taught them to listen, cooperate and persevere. Every appearance on stage reflected not only hours of practice, but also a willingness to challenge themselves and grow.

These experiences in recitation and performance did more than strengthen students’ Chinese expression skills. Through real stage experiences, students learned to present themselves with confidence and to speak up with courage. The applause, the audience’s attention and the stage lights became treasured memories along their journey of growth. When children dare to step onto the stage and express themselves through language, they gain not only linguistic ability, but also the confidence and courage to engage with the world.
